Two earspools
Aztec, ca 1300 to 1500 A.D.,
Obsidian,
Heights: 1 and 1 1/4 inches.
Not a pair, these two earspools are both carved of obsidian, but one is much thinner walled than the other, and required tremendous skill to carve the inherently fragile volcanic glass. They are excellent examples of the high skill the stone age civilizations of Meso America reached in the Aztec Period.
Side view of the thin walled earspool showing how finely carved it is.
