Stemmed Cup
Mixtec,
Ca. 1300 to 1500 A.D., Painted Terracotta,
Height: 2 inches.
This small footed cup is covered with finely painted meanders and other motifs seen throughout Meso-America on the architecture and art. It represents the heights reached by Mixtec artisans who were contemporaries of the Aztecs, and were incoporated into their empire. Their artisans created many of the monuments used to illustrate Aztec period art, from exquisite goldwork to finely made pottery.
