Head of a masked Shaman
Mayan, Classic Period.,
Ca. 600 to 900 A.D., Terracotta,
Height: 2 1/2 inches.
Made of compressed and fired clay this fine small head represents a Shaman in transition, what appears masklike actually seems to be the head of the shaman. Highly stylized it is quire fearsome, and yet sort of clownlike, and may in fact represent the Jester God. It is an excellent and fine example of the highly stylized Classic Mayan art.
Another view of the small head.
