Amulet of Tawret
Egyptian, Late Period,
Ca. 700 to 300 B.C., Glazed Faience,
Height: 1 inch.

This exquisite miniature sculpture depicts the Hippopotamus headed goddess of childbirth. Only one inch high as preserved, every detail has been superbly carved, the strands of her apet wig, the teeth are individually indicated, the ear, eyes and other anatomical details done with precision. The human body of the goddess depicts a gravid woman with full slack breasts and large belly of a woman about to give birth. Her arms and legs end in lion paws, giving the goddess the combined attributes of the hippo and lion, both known for their ferocity, as appropriate for the protectress of pregnant women. There is a loop on the back, such amulets were worn or hung from furniture to protect their owner.
