Incised Jade Bi
Chinese, Western Chou Dynasty,
Ca 1200 B.C.
Height: 6 inches.

This beautiful Bi has been repolished in part to expose the green color of the un modified jade, with the other areas altered to a chicken bone color. Incised with double lines into the surface is a complex pattern of crouching monsters with curved claws, four in all. Hard to make out and not identifiable, I call them tigers as they seem not to be dragons, and on account of the claws and the markings. However they might more accurately be referred to as monsters. The overall pattern animates the surface like flames dancing on the disk.t.
